Career Change?

September 11th comes and it seems like it's a normal day. I listened to some of ceremonies on the radio as I was getting ready for work on Thursday. September 11th has an added significance for our school. Our school was named after a fallen Phoenix firefighter that was killed in March 2001 prior to our school opening. September 11th was his birthday.
Many schools are named after people who have contributed to their communities but after awhile no one remembers who they are. By honoring Bret Tarver, our students learn about him and his contribution to the Phoenix community. Tarver Day includes a student parade around our campus and speakers from throughout the community visit classrooms. Then the students partake in a variety of activities on the playground.
I heard that ours is the only (large) school in the nation named after a firefighter. I don't know if that's true or not but the Phoenix Fire Department is always represented. This year was the first time Music and Art didn't have to teach classes in the afternoon. Instead we were out on the playground with the students. During a short break we each tried our hand manning the fire hose.
Fun was had by all. Now I understand what the Chicklet means when she says she had "the best day ever!" It did get a little soggy. I'll stick to getting dirty in the art room.

  1. It looks like a lot of fun. How many people can say that they have held a fire hose?
